History
A young woman in a pink silk dress swings high and kicks off a slipper, while an older man pushes from the shadows and a young man hidden in the roses looks up at her. A playwright's memoirs say a courtier first asked the painter Gabriel François Doyen to show his mistress this way, pushed by a bishop; Doyen refused and passed the job to Fragonard. Fragonard painted a layman instead of the bishop. It is one of the best known pictures of the French Rococo. Lord Hertford bought it at auction in Paris in 1865, and it is now in the Wallace Collection, which his family left to Britain.
