Wheatfield with Crows

Van Gogh painted it at Auvers-sur-Oise in July 1890, in the last weeks of his life. The canvas is twice as wide as it is tall, a shape he used for the wheat fields around the village. Under a dark sky, three paths lead nowhere and crows rise over the wheat. It is often called his last painting, though he probably made others after it. He wrote of fields under troubled skies, of sadness and extreme loneliness, but also of what he found healthy and strengthening in the countryside.
